Goddesses - Artemis, negative space?

A sangria pitcher which I enjoy a lot...not just in observing the form, but in mixing different tasting beverages!

A cornocopia represents abundance, a filling of a negative space with fruits and vegetables.

Just to give an example of an ancient goddess...here's Artemis, with a modern woman standing by to give a comparison of her size. I think of how men have breast fetishes in our culture...and whow, look at those! Somehow I don't think this would make a centerfold.

Tree goddess lantern

So glad to think that this goddess form is in a friend's home. And I've been thinking a lot about how the negative spaces in a simple form have two ways of being viewed, whether or not being lit by a candle.

I think it's time for me to have fun with the way slab work can be bent, attached, and carved. Again.

Foliage

This was sold last year, and I don't remember if it was to a friend, or just at one of the TailGate markets on Sat. morning.
That's coming up again soon. Our little co-op just met, and delegated who would be at the market which Saturdays during the summer.

Now this is my very own cauldron, which these days holds a huge purple shamrock. It is doing just fine here in the living room, with muted sunlight.

The purple foliage is such a good ground for the colors of the cauldron!

Early stages of my sculpture from a figure class last winter.

Here's the banner from Clay Club's blog.

Clay Club
Clay Club aims to connect potters and ceramic artists of our community. We exchange ideas, share information and form friendships

If you haven't been to that site, try it sometime. Lots of Western North Carolina pottery news. http://ncclayclub.blogspot.com/

I've sent John Britt the invitation to go out to members (???) of Clay Club for this month's meeting next week at BMCA (Black Mountain Center for the Arts, Clay Studio)

*****************************************
Clay Club at Clay Studio of BMCA

All potters, clay addicts, and others (artists, students, good cooks etc) are welcome to the Pot Luck meet of the Clay Club, Wed, May 11 at the Clay Studio of The Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

Meet at 6:30 for food & demos by Annie Singletary, John Britt, and ??? (if you've got a technique to share, plese speak up).

Where is it?
The Clay Studio is located downhill and behind the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, in a small separate building.

Off I-40, go north from exit 64 towards downtown Black Mountain. At State Street (3rd traffic light) take a left. Within 2 blocks, the Center for the Arts will be on your left, (just after the Dripolator Coffee Shop and just before the Thai Basil Restaurant.) To park behind the Center for the Arts, take the next left at that traffic light (steep hill down) and the left at the first driveway into a parking area. If it is full, there's another parking area below it, as you continue down the hill.

More information available from Black Mountain Center for the Arts at (828) 669-0930, or Barbara Rogers, here.

I'm really psyched about getting some groups of potters together...what fun we may have!

4 elements vase

A bit of a bald eagle soaring through air...

Some crystals to remind us of earth...

And of course a mountain waterfall for the element of water...

Spring reminds me of my 4 elements pot...showing here the firey side...

I have to hang my humming bird feeder soon. Here's my mask of a hummer...greatly dressed up in irridescent black. Oh you know, in case you want a masked ball of hummingbirds!

The Lyre player...which isn't for sale. The simplicity of her listening ...

Happy Beltaine!

A quick peak at my trio of trees, tres amigas, or our threesome friendship into goddesses.
My friends and I stand amusing ourselves, as ceramic tree goddesses, much as surprised to be here in this form as many of the other occasions we've shared.

Being our authentic selves, we have moved throughout the lives that have extended past our adolescent selves, parenting, partnering, and often exploring whatever was happening around us.

So today I celebrate having such good life long friends. Hail!

vase glazes

A small kind of kinky shape with celadon and Matt bronze green glazes...kind of over-laid together.

Another view of the kinky pot.

I really like the flowing things the celadon made happen...

A small vase with carved fluting.

One sweet goddess stamped into small vase with flutings.
Back view of fluted small vase.

First vase with negative space. I'm about to start a series of different shapes.

These were cherry blossoms which have just started to bloom on the tree outside my studio.

Glaze is amber over matt bronze green...sponged on.
